Congratulations to Brittany H. and Nasra M. both of Campbell Collegiate. They were selected to train with the other 2013 Team Canada hopefuls at the two-day National selection tournament at the end of November 2011. The final team will be announced later in the year.

Selection for the 2014 Team Canada will most likely occur in the Spring of 2013.

Each year, the CSDF holds a Selection Tournament, the event which selects the members of the Canadian team to attend the Pan American Championships . Held over two days and often in conjunction with another National event, the selection process involves workshops on the world's style of debate, at least six debate rounds, submission of a resume and an interview process.

To select its delegates to this event, SEDA has a two-part process: all debaters are welcome to apply to attend a day-long selection event, including a workshop on Worlds style and two to three Worlds style rounds. The number of delegates is limited to 18 people. If necessary, SEDA's selection committee will narrow down the candidates prior to the Sask qualifier based on the applications.

Interested debaters will be evaluated during practice rounds. Final selection will be based on a combination of factors, including but not limited to: participation at the workshop and evaluation rounds, submission of a resume/application form, interviews, scores from previous years, and overall suitability as a candidate. The earlier a young debater begins attending the workshops, the more experience they'll have with World's style and they'll benefit from more directed training.

Please see the SEDA Constitution and Policy Manual for the complete selection criteria and details.

Each province can send three students to the Selection Tournament. Registration fees are $150.00 and travel to the event is entirely the responsibility of the competitors. Competitors must not be in their final year of high school and successful students attend a training camp during the summer following their selection. During this training camp, a further selection is conducted to select the members of the Canadian National Team, which attend the World Schools Championship. Those selected for the team are expected to attend a week-long training camp immediately preceding the World Schools Championship and the Championship itself. Members of the Canadian National team should also expect extensive time commitments for researching topics and communication with the rest of the team. As well, Team Canada may travel to three or more international competitions prior to the World Championships. A significant personal financial investment of $10,000 or more is likely necessary. Please keep these requirements in mind when making the decision to try out for the team.
