SEDA is sad to announce that the 2012 Model Legislature is cancelled for Saturday March 31.

If I can get 20 debaters to confirm their interest for May 12 (or some other agreed upon date) I would be happy to make the arrangements. Please let me know!

Model Legislature1Model Legislature is a fun opportunity for students in grades 9 to 12 to recreate a piece of Saskatchewan history. It is an annual event held each spring in Regina. It is lots of fun and open to any student wishing to take part, regardless of past debate or speaking experience.

Each year a different era comes alive as students hold parliamentary debates in the Chamber of Saskatchewan's historic Legislative Building. Students step into the roles of party leaders, cabinet ministers, and opposition critics. Dressing in period costume adds to the atmosphere.

Debates focus on actual historical bills. Step back to the 1900's, when womens' right to vote was hotly contested. Return to the Roaring 20's, when alcohol was outlawed. Visit the groovy 60's to talk about the Vietnam conflict. These topics, coupled with some modern-day debates and student-created Private Members Bills, add up to some interesting discussions. Participants gain insight into how government operates and how legislation is created. It is also an opportunity to meet various MLA's who volunteer to preside as Speaker of the House.

Model Legislature2While recreating history, students simultaneously develop valuable skills including public speaking, critical and creative thinking, listening, independent learning, teamwork and group work, researching, and problem solving.

Should women have the right to vote?
Should liquor be outlawed?
Should Saskatchewan adopt medicare?
Should Saskatchewan support American involvement in Vietnam?

These are just some of the topics discussed at Model Legislature!
