March 1, 2006 - CSDF Chair selected:
Willis S. McLeese Chair in Canadian Debating - Rory
McKeown
Chris Taylor, Director of Community Relations at Upper Canada
College
(UCC) and I are pleased to announce that effective March 1,
2006;
Roderick (Rory) McKeown will become the McLeese Chair in
Canadian
Debating.
Established in 2002, The Willis S. McLeese Chair in Canadian
Debating
is funded through an endowment to the College from UCC
grandparents
Willis S. McLeese and Dr. Adelaide McLeese.
Rory, currently a PhD candidate in English at the University of
Toronto
is an accomplished debater and adjudicator of debate and
public
speaking. Rory is passionate about the value of student
debate as "it
has the inherent value of helping students develop their
analytical and
rhetorical skills. Just as importantly, it exposes students to
new
ideas and new people, and challenges them to develop in a more
holistic
manner."
In this challenging role, Rory will support and advance student
debate
and public speaking at the high school level by developing
outreach
programs and facilitating access to resources and training
workshops
for coaches and students throughout the country. He will also
provide a
key management function to the CSDF to further the vision of
student
debating across Canada.
Additionally, Rory will support UCC's teachers and students in
their
debate and public speaking program, liaise with teachers to
coordinate
participation in tournaments and develop age-appropriate
curricular
materials which may be shared with other schools across
Canada.
Rory, working on a part time contract, will divide his time
equally
between the CSDF and UCC. His office is located at Upper
Canada
College in Toronto, and he can be contacted by phone at (416)
488-1125,
extension 8633 or by email at
rmckeown@csdf-fcde.ca.
Please join me in welcoming Rory to the Canadian Student
Debating
Federation.
Thank you.
